Seeing as we are all outdoor enthusiasts I thought I would touch on the subject of hiking. Who doesn’t love that fresh crisp morning air? It is hard to believe that there are people out there that do not want to climb a mountain early morning to experience natural in all its glory. I suppose this is beneficial to us that do enjoy it as there are less people on our tracks.

While hiking is an amazing past time, it is important to remember that it can be a dangerous one. You can indeed trip and fall or slip or for whatever reason, get stuck on the mountain.

Below are our top 7 items to pack when hiking

1. Water

You would think that this is common sense but there have been cases when people have gone hiking and not taken sufficient water. You should take at least 2l of water with you and then have a backup means of filling an additional bottle. You can easily purchase those collapsible silicone bottles which fold up and can be put in your emergency kit.

2 . Something Warm

 

The temperature on a mountain tends to be quite volatile. While it might seem like a sunny and hot day things can change in an instance. Clouds can pull over or the wind can come up. When nightfall comes the temperature plummets. Be sure to take a warm jacket with. You never know what might happen.

3. Hiking shoes

 

I know this seems like a silly thing to put on the list but people often go hiking in normal trainers. It isn’t an issue to use trainers if you go once in a blue moon but if you plan on hiking religiously then we suggest you invest in hiking boots. Not only have these got better grip for hiking but they are usually waterproof and keep your feet extra warm. If you were to get stranded or stuck on a mountain – you definitely want something that offers more warmth than breathable trainers.

4. Comfortable pants

Although Jeans or denims are durable, they do not make great hiking pants. They definitely protect you against scratches and the sun but they can be hot, make you sweat and cause chaffing. You can pick up decent pants that wont set you back an arm and a leg and that still offer you the same sort of protection but with more comfort.

5. Something to eat

This is NB –  Pack something to keep your energy levels up and your tummy comfortable. Once you reach the top of your route ( or even when you have a mid way break) it is nice to have something to snack on. If you were to get stuck – At least you will have some snacks to keep you going .

6.  A small medical kit

Don’t underestimate the importance of a small medical kit. You can easily clip it onto your belt loop or put it into your backpack. Inside this medical kit should be a something to stabilize a broken limb, something to stop bleeding, gauze, plasters and then something to cut plasters or gauze with. A great item to add is a survival knife as not only can it cut your items but it can be used as added protection against unwanted encounters on the mountain.  Thankfully there is no need for extreme survival gear such as night vision goggles or binoculars.

7.  A comfortable Backpack

Your backpack will carry all the items that you cannot carry in your hands/do not want to. It holds your food, water, jacket and medical kit. This is one of the most important items to your kit as without it you couldn’t carry many things. Your backpack should fit well and should have a waist and chest strap. The chest strap prevents the backpack from slipping off of your shoulders.
